Hard water & shampoo bars — what you need to know

Why does my hair feel waxy or heavy after using a shampoo bar?

In hard water, the minerals (mainly calcium and magnesium) react with the cleansing agents in soap-based bars to form an insoluble residue — sometimes called soap scum — that can coat the hair shaft. This can leave hair feeling waxy, heavy, or dull. Our bars are formulated with sodium cocoyl isethionate (SCI) rather than traditional soap, which significantly reduces this reaction, but some buildup is still possible in very hard water.

Will a clarifying rinse help?

Yes — an apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse can help. Mix 1–2 tablespoons of ACV in a cup of water, pour it over your hair after shampooing, leave for 30–60 seconds, then rinse well. The mild acidity helps dissolve mineral deposits and close the hair cuticle, leaving hair smoother and shinier. Some people use it weekly; others only when buildup starts — find what works for your water and hair.

Does everyone experience hard-water issues?

Not at all. Many people use shampoo bars in hard water without any trouble. Hair type, porosity, water hardness level, and rinse habits all play a role. Coarse or curly hair tends to be more resilient; fine or porous hair may notice buildup sooner. If you're just switching to solid bars, give your hair a couple of weeks to adjust before drawing conclusions.

What else can I do?

Rinsing very thoroughly is the single most effective step — residue is much more likely when shampoo isn't fully washed out. A water-softening shower filter can also make a noticeable difference if you live in an area with particularly hard water. Following with our Deep Repair Conditioner Bar helps smooth the cuticle after every wash.

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes; if contact occurs, rinse well with water. Discontinue use if irritation occurs. Contains essential oils; patch test recommended for sensitive skin.
